Just to confirm that I also had this exact problem on Mac OS X 10.5.6.
My X11 version is 2.0 (as shown in Finder) or "XQuartz 2.1.6" according to X11
-> About X11.
Upgrading to OS X 10.5.8 fixed the issues without making any other changes.
(Though all the fonts in the UI are *much* bigger in the last version I had
installed (1.0!))
