That isn't going to be true if the interpreted manufacturer name is *shorter*
than 8 characters, so if it's an important feature, it's not a feature that
actually exists.

Perhaps, *when used in MAC addresses that aren't translated to host names*,
it's useful to have the manufacturer name truncated to a maximum of 8
characters, but in other contexts, such as 802.11 IEs, it serves no useful
purpose.
