 Revised patch against revision 27161.

Hi,

I've made some more changes to the patch. I've changed much of the internal
structure, so that error checking can be done centrally. They are a bit more
thoroughly, too, and I hope the code is a bit easier to read now.

Improvements seen by the user include the possibility to search for specific
gauge values, search for values of unknown type, and more detailed ``expert''
output.

I've tested the code with that fuzz-test.sh script and it survived 1000
iterations. If you find any problems, please let me know.
