Could you give some more detail on this problem? I can't seem to reproduce it.
If I open a capture file and type a '$' to start a filter, it works fine on my
WinXP and on my Linux box.

Are you sure your '$' is not in any other way bound on your system?

(I had the same problem with <CTRL>+<SPACE> before on my system, it turned out
to be bound to another running application)
