I was thinking of just looking at the value of pinfo->p2p_dir.

This is examined and used to set the source and Dest columns, at least for the
case when it thinks hdlc framing is being used.

packet-frame.c sets this from the encapsulations WTAP_ENCAP_PPP_WITH_PHDR but I
guess your file format uses WTAP_ENCAP_PPP.

It looks as though even with your encap type, if the first byte is 0xff, its
treated as the PHDR variant.

Do you Src and Dst columns currently show DCE or DTE?  If they show N/A I think
you're out of luck.  If the information is in your trace file format, there is
no reason why the other encapsulation can't be used instead and pinfo->p2p_dir
filled in and used.
