Just to remove some possibilities, have you read:
http://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup and especially
http://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/InterferingSoftware?

As you indicated that the name resolution is part of the problem. Could you
disable ADNS in the Preferences (ADNS might be the problem)? To do this: under
"Name Resolution" uncheck the "Enable concurrent DNS name resolution" while
keeping the other name resolution options enabled.

You may restart Wireshark after setting this.

I guess this has something to do with your two CPU machine, although I don't
know what.

Remark: http://www.winpcap.org/misc/faq.htm#Q-15 indicates that WinPcap
supports SMP machines.
