gmake shouldn't be necessary - automake's supposed to create Makefiles where
"make dist" will create a tarball with a Makefile.in that shouldn't require it
(yes, that sounds a bit contorted, but it *is* a bit contorted - the
Makefile.in created by automake as run by autogen.sh requires gmake, but the
one created by "make dist" doesn't).
