You can use "tethereal | grep" or something like that if you want
the ascii output parsed by an external application. If you want
the binary data to be passed to an external application, then you can use "ethereal -w- | <some libpcap-capable application>"

Presumably you meant "tethereal -w -", not "ethereal -w -"; that's supported by Tethereal, but not Ethereal.

If GeorgeN meant Ethereal, there's currently no option to send packets to an external application.
