You need NIC drivers that can pass it up to Ethereal.  But more important than that, old Cabletron MMACs were the only switches (that I know) that has the option of forwarding malformed frames to the mirror/span port.  So unless you are using a true hub or have MMAC switches, you'll never see the frame level errors.
