Ethereal-users: [Ethereal-users] how fast is Ethereal sampling rate?

Does anyone knows the speed Ethereal capture from the network interface? Is it dependent on the Operating System, or whether Ethereal captures all the packets passing through the network interface? Is there any instance where Ethereal cannot capture fast enough, and drop packets?
