...which is better with a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but
requires the user to do so every time they run the program, so a way to
specify it in a configuration file (e.g., a .gtkrc file?) - and to
specify it from the GUI (and allow that to be saved to the configuration
file) would be useful.

GTK+ 1.4 will, apparently, change the way fonts are handled (for the
Pango internationalization stuff), and that may also let you specify
fonts in a more friendly fashion than an XLFD blob of characters.
