Two things come to my mind that should be done:
1) I needed to back out the tmpnam non-fix because of lack of time.
   tmpnam still needs to be fixed for security reasons
2) we should avoid linking with openssl libs unless a configure option
   is given (openssl is gpl incompatible unless it is a system lib)
