Interesting numbers: gcc 3.4-pre with -O3 on Suse 9.0:
libethereal: 12 MB, ethereal (unstripped/stripped): 9.8/8.3 MB

Yes, the messages are confusing: Currently, shared means linked against
shared libs. static meansxt completely statically linked (which is not
working on my Suse 9.0 - it links with warnings but is not really an
executable any more).
