That's true only if all *nix systems have at least two non-loopback devices on which you can capture; that's not necessarily the case:

	% ./tethereal -D
	1. en0
	2. lo0
	%

(I said "on which you can capture" as "ifconfig -a" reports some other interfaces, but they're not up and running so BPF doesn't let you bind to them; Ethereal/Tethereal report only interfaces that can be opened.)
