I forgot two hints:

1) register.c starts with the following two lines:
/* Do not modify this file.  */
/* It is created automatically by the Makefile.  */

2) Have a short look at doc/README.developer, we try to keep it up to date
  so it should be of some use :)  and sort of includes hint 1 and some from
  my previous mail.
