I hope by "strings" you mean "arrays of bytes" rather than "character
strings"; unless something really is a character string, it shouldn't be
treated as one.

See earlier mail from me for the way I think 64-bit integral fields
should be treated on platforms that lack support for "gint64"/"guint64".
