Howdy I just helped Stuart to get him up to speed with ethereal source via anoncvs using ssh. I didn't see any instructions for this method on the web page so i thought i'd post my quick and dirty one's so someone could incorporate them on the web pages. This is for folks behind a firewall that won't allow pserver connections through. diana diana eichert network systems analyst org 4614 sandia national laboratories soccer, softball and volleyball player (computer nerds need exercise too!) albuquerque, nm -----Original Message----- From: Eichert, Diana Sent: December 09, 1999 2:31 PM To: 'Stuart Stanley' Subject: RE: [ethereal-dev] How to submit without cvs Ah, there is a method called anoncvs that was developed by the OpenBSD crew for cvs updates. In fact the ethereal people setup anoncvs pretty much just for me, 'cause you'll see that there is no mention of this on the ethereal home page. ( for more info on anoncvs goto http://www.openbsd.org/anoncvs.html ) you have ssh, correct? you have ssh setup to use non-privileged ports, if your firewall people are paranoid enough, otherwise forget i even mentioned it depending on your shell you are using set the variable "CVSROOT=anoncvs@xxxxxxxxxxxx:/cvsroot" at shell prompt at the directory above where you want ethereal to reside: "cvs -t get -PA ethereal" you should get prompted with: The authenticity of host 'pow.zing.org' can't be established. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? go ahead and enter "yes" ( from this point on you should never get asked this question ) voila it should start checking out the ethereal source code after that to update the code to -current from the ethereal source code directory (don't forget to set that CVSROOT variable) at the shell: "cvs -t up" hope this make sense BTW, i just ran through this again 'cause i wanted to try a new feature out available only to -current. have fun diana diana eichert network systems analyst org 4614 sandia national laboratories soccer, softball and volleyball player (computer nerds need exercise too!) albuquerque, nm -----Original Message----- From: Stuart Stanley [mailto:stuarts@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: December 09, 1999 2:09 PM To: Eichert, Diana Subject: Re: [ethereal-dev] How to submit without cvs > I think you can connect via ssh, in which case in the ssh_config file tell > it to use unprivileged ports. > > YMMV > > diana Ug. Sorry about the blank message prior to this. I hit the deliver instead of "insert text" button on ML. sheesh. Anyway, just to prove I am _completely_ clueless, how would one get ssh access to the cvs site? I thought ssh required a logon of some sort. Feel free to toss me in the direction of any doco on it! Once again, sorry for the empty email. On the side of the software box, in the "System | Stuart Stanley Requirements" section, it said "Requires Windows | stuarts@xxxxxxxxxx 95 or better". So I installed Linux. | Lucent Technologies, | Eden Prairie, MN | 612.996.6829
