Is there any alternative for reassembling a buffer on the same frame
from other subsets of buffers?

It works, but it uses memory.

I still have high hopes (maybe just dreams?) of doing something to lower

Wireshark's memory usage, and composite TVBs might play a part.

Of course, the fact that they don't work does imply we might want to 
comment them out for the time being--unless someone wants to get them 
working.
