We recently had a problem with the preferences causing crashes (see bug 
#2053: http://bugs.wireshark.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2053).  It 
looks like it was fixed as of version 0.99.8.  Try downloading the source 
code to the latest version (1.0.0) from www.wireshark.org and using 
that.
