Perhaps the reason is that, according to "11.1.2 Maintaining synchronization" in ANSI/IEEE Std 802.11, 1999 Edition, "Each STA shall maintain a TSF timer with modulus 2^64 counting in increments of *microseconds*." (Emphasis mine.)
