OK, it looks like the problem is that r42200 is/was dependent on r34514
("rework extended value strings").
If I simply back r42200 back out of trunk-1.4, it no longer seg-faults. The
comment in bug 7138 asked why the problem just started appearing; I didn't
investigate that; maybe it's a glib-version question.
This may be a mess to clean up...
