BTW, in r42431 I took the opposite assumption and said that all non-i386
processors need 8-byte alignment.  Based on what you say here, should the sense
of that be reversed and just do it for SPARC and maybe ia64 (you know, for the
benefit of the 5 people running non-i386 or non-SPARC processors ;-)).
