Patch from netexpert.cn referred to in bug
It's not a big change; I've attached a patch generated by diff (and
post-editing to get rid of the carriage returns at the ends of lines). I'm not
sure the changes are the right way to fix things; there's work to do to improve
the character code handling, including fixing the handling of strings that are
interpreted as UTF-8 but that aren't valid UTF-8.
We probably want to try to find out why it crashes, and address that directly.
