It looks like it ought to work. I'm assuming Makefile.nmake already has
VERSION_MAJOR etc. defined somewhere.
As for other platforms, I imagine it would need some sort of Automake magic.
Not really my area of expertise unfortunately. I took a stab at patching the
Makefile.am and configure files, but couldn't get anything to work as expected.
