Repurposing for the general problem - fixing it only for Linux isn't as
interesting as fixing it for as many OSes as possible, including Windows, and
that's what the current code in the trunk should be doing ("should" in the "not
tested, but in theory should work" sense, not "should" in the "it doesn't work
now, but it would be a good thing if we made it do so" sense).
