Microsoft refers to a "friendly name" for network interfaces. From userland,
it's fetched with the OID_GEN_FRIENDLY_NAME OID:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff569584(v=VS.85).aspx

and is supported for NDIS 5.1 and later adapter drivers, hence supported in
Windows XP and later.

I'm not sure, when they say "miniport adapter" there, they mean "individual
network interface" or "miniport driver" by "miniport adapter". They say

Friendly names are intended to help the user quickly and accurately identify
a miniport adapter--for example, "PCI Ethernet Adapter" and "Virtual Private
Networking Adapter" are considered friendly names.

which is not entirely encouraging - what if you have more than one "PCI
Ethernet Adapter"?
