I haven't been able to reproduce this problem nor find any likely cause.

It sounds a *lot* like you've got a very slow DNS service so that the first
time you load the file it takes forever (at least for the first few lookups)
but after that the DNS responses are cached (maybe on your DNS server) so the
file loading is fast.

But, that contradicts your statement about the problem happening even when DNS
lookups are turned off.  (Hmmm, but wasn't there a bug a while ago where name
lookups were being done anyway??)

How about this: can you try running Wireshark to capture the DNS lookups while
loading the capture file?
