This just happened to me as well. OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) on a MacBook Pro
w/ 4GB of RAM. Wireshark version was 1.2.2.
wireshark-bin(3254,0xa08d1500) malloc: *** mmap(size=16777216) failed (error
code=12)
*** error: can't allocate region
*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug
***MEMORY-ERROR***: wireshark-bin[3254]: GSlice: failed to allocate 4088 bytes
(alignment: 4096): Cannot allocate memory
