When I say Terminal, I mean the Mac OS X Terminal application, too.

However, you say

If you can't even paste in an X11 application, the problem might be that the
text isn't being copied to the X11 clipboard correctly, and that it happens to
work within Wireshark because the copy is happening within one process and
perhaps bypassing the full X11 clipboard mechanism.

What does "ps -ef" print?  (Perhaps some other process is messing up the
clipboard.)

Is the copy of Wireshark in which you did the copy still running when you try
to paste (either within Terminal or within xterm)?
