Thanks for taking the time to review the code and submit a patch.

It turns out that this particular bug was fixed in the development branch
around the end of January '09 during the general work to remove all GTK1
related code from Wireshark.

As you note, this patch is really a clean-up so I don't see a need for the
patch to be applied to the stable branch (1.0.7, 1.0.8, etc).

(While reviewing this patch and looking at the current development branch
prefs_column.c, I noted a similar issue to the one you reported; Fixing that
bug lead to a number of other fixes for the Column Preferencess dialog; So:
