You hit the nail with this.  Both of the applications you suggested exhibit the
same behavior over LANDesk.  I will report this to the GTK team.

I have found a workaround.  After playing with the LANDesk settings there is
one called Automatic Keyboard Remapping (recommended).  When I turn this off
I'm able to type again!
