Quality with a capital KW!  Is this a screwup by the distribution, or the
Portland Group, or both?

You should report this to Gentoo as a bug in xdg-open - even if we're running
it incorrectly, it should print an error message, not spew out an error because
you (presumably) don't have KDE installed (or don't have kfmclient in your
path) and then spew out a bunch of shell syntax errors.

There are some changes we might want to make in the browser/file-manager
launching code - see the big comment near the beginning of gtk/webbrowser.c. 
I'll see if I can work around this as part of that.
