The procedure to add a new column is a little different from other GUI's.
Please try the following procedure to add a new column.

- Open the column preferences tab
- click on "New"
- scroll down to the end of the list of columns
- Give the column a different title
- Select the format to use for the new column
- Use the "Up" and "Down" buttons to place the column where you want it in the
list
- Click on "OK"

This should give you your new column and it should be saved also between
sessions.

If the above procedure does not work for you, please specify what goes wrong in
detail.
