Well, you're not the only one... See bug #481 for another case of slowness
that has been around for a couple of years for the user. Does your CPU peg at
100% when running Wireshark like the other case? We haven't been able to
figure out the other bug because it is so rare, but perhaps your case could
help us solve both yours and the other person's problem.
Have you ever run an older version of Wireshark? Or even Ethereal (our name up
to about a year and a half ago)?
