Just checked, running "/usr/sbin/ethereal" as an ordinary user works fine. 
CentOS 4.3 with updates still won't run using "consolehelper".

[seitz@demo5 ~]$ rpm -qf /usr/bin/consolehelper
usermode-1.74-1
[seitz@demo5 ~]$ rpm -qf /usr/bin/ethereal
ethereal-gnome-0.99.0-EL4.2
[seitz@demo5 ~]$
[seitz@demo5 ~]$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 4.3 (Final)
