In fact Wireshark should not have run out of memory while using "multiple
files" mode anyway.  A similar problem is mentioned in bug 486 (still open).

About the missing files, were you using "ring buffer" mode?  That mode means
that only N files are kept, the older ones are removed.

Anyway, if you need to capture for a long time, 'dumpcap' may be a better tool
for you to use.
