I have also noticed the same/similar behaviour.  I filed <a
href="http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=346900";>#346900</a> with GTK+.
Gimp had similar behaviour, bug <a
href="http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339099";>#339099</h> has more
information with a patch for the Gimp, presumable a patch for Ethereal would be
similar?
