It looks like this was fixed in revision 18729.  Gerald's checkin comments:

Under Solaris (9, at least) the "iconv.h" header supplied with GNU libiconv
is incompatible with the iconv routines in libc.  Add an aclocal macro from
Bruno Haible that sorts everything out.

I haven't tried it out and since I'm not 100% sure it's the same issue, I won't
close the bug (yet).
